Villa Karang located in Gili Air, NTB, this restaurant, and the bar was created to expand the existing restaurant and bar area. Previously, the restaurant and bar areas were located far apart (not in 1 area), the restaurant area was on the left side of the site, while the bar area was in front near the beach. Now the owner wants to unite the restaurant and bar in one area and wants it to be more visible to people anchored on the beach.
Therefore, the restaurant building is placed in the middle with a function only as a dining area, because the kitchen remains in the existing location (previous location). For this restaurant area, an existing building that was previously used for rooms is used. For this restaurant building, 2 existing rooms are used as 1 as an indoor dining area. With the addition of 2 toilet rooms.
Then in front of this indoor area added a roof extension for the outdoor dining area, added a decking area for the sitting area that is not exposed to the roof, so that people can sit around while still exposed to direct sunlight (sunbathing). The bar area is positioned close to the pavement of the beach road so that it is easily visible and can be accessed directly by pedestrians to order a drink. The pair in front of the bar area is given a sitting area with seating in the form of bean bags so that visitors who come can immediately sit in the area while enjoying the view of the sea and the beach sand.
Coastal Tropical Concept
With the concept of coastal tropical, this restaurant and bar feature wood material with whitewash finishing for the building columns. The predominance of white is chosen to make it stand out from the existing buildings on this site so that it is easier to see. The use of wood materials on decking and some furniture makes the tropical concept more pronounced. Bean bags as seats that are in a position close to the pedestrian path are chosen which are more colorful so that there are games so that they are not monotonous.
The division of space used is by using leveling where the indoor dining area is at the highest level, and for the outdoor area, it is at a different level, while the bean bag area is at the shortest level, which is directly in contact with the beach sand. The bar area is also on a different level and in a different area even though it is still close to the lounging area. The use of a planter box made of wood also provides space separation without visually limiting the space. And the use of planter boxes also provides spaces for vegetation (plants) so that the tropical impression is more pronounced.
A gable roof with a low degree and a tapered tip is deliberately applied to make it look like a boat sail. With the selection of transparent roof material, this wide roof makes it look lighter and does not block people’s views and also so that sunlight can still enter the sitting area. The roof of the bar area is also chosen with transparent material so as not to block people’s views, even though its position is in front of the site.
